A new chapter for Space Studio
A new chapter – Collaboration leadership
Space Studio has announced a new era of leadership with Monique Enoka‑Davidson and David Sweatman joining Vee Kessner as Directors of the award-winning interior design practice. The transition marks an evolution for one of New Zealand’s most respected studios, known for its human-centred approach, refined storytelling, and long-standing partnerships across the Pacific and beyond.
Founded over two decades ago by Vee, Space Studio has built a reputation for interiors that marry authenticity and atmosphere, crafting environments that speak to both place and people. From the luxury of Six Senses Fiji and Gibbston Valley Lodge & Residences to urban icons like Cordis Auckland and Te Arikinui Pullman Auckland Airport, the studio’s work consistently reflects an understated confidence rooted in narrative and detail.
Continuing a Legacy, Shaping the Future
For both Monique and David, the new structure represents continuity as much as opportunity. Having each contributed significantly to Space Studio’s growth over the past decade, their leadership signals a collective commitment to the studio’s ethos of collaboration and authenticity.
“What excites me most,” says Monique, “is guiding Space Studio through its next chapter, maintaining our boutique scale and personalised approach, while pursuing strategic growth across Oceania and Asia. There’s enormous potential to deepen our impact and continue creating interiors that resonate deeply with both place and people.”
David echoes this sentiment, noting that Space Studio’s evolution under shared leadership reflects the same values that have defined its design process for years.
“We’re a studio built on relationships, within the team, with our clients, and with our collaborators. After 20 years of Vee’s dedicated leadership, it feels fitting that the next phase continues that spirit of shared ownership and collective creativity.”
Designing for Meaning and Longevity
Space Studio’s design philosophy remains anchored in creating memorable, enduring interiors that transcend trend and time. The team’s work is defined by its layered materiality, refined detailing, and sensitivity to context, whether that’s the vineyards of Central Otago or the tropical shores of Fiji.
Monique describes the studio’s approach as “design as storytelling”:
“Authenticity sits at the heart of what we do. Each project reflects its own identity, shaped by the landscape, culture, and people who will inhabit it. We aim to leave a lasting impression through thoughtful design and a deep respect for context.”
David adds that the practice’s strength lies in its breadth and adaptability, from hospitality and high-end residential to large-scale commercial and aged-care environments.
“I love the variation. Working across multiple sectors and stages keeps us fresh, connected, and constantly learning.”
Culture, Collaboration, and Care
For Vee, who remains an active director, the expansion of leadership feels both natural and energising.
“Space has always thrived on collaboration. Seeing Monique and David bring their own strengths, strategic, creative, and people-focused, to the forefront is incredibly exciting. Together, we’re building a framework that keeps the studio approachable, agile, and deeply human.”
That human focus is a recurring theme. Monique references the Māori proverb He tangata, he tangata, he tangata; it is people, it is people, it is people as a guiding principle. It’s a sentiment that shapes everything from client relationships to studio culture.
“Leadership isn’t about hierarchy,” she says. “It’s about creating space for others to thrive. When you build a culture of trust and empathy, creativity naturally flourishes.”
Looking Ahead
As Space Studio continues to expand its footprint across New Zealand, Australia, and the Pacific, the trio’s combined leadership points toward a future defined by collaboration, innovation, and continuity. The studio’s focus is as forward-thinking as it is grounded. In a sector often defined by pace and competition, Space Studio stands apart for its quiet confidence anchored by integrity, collaboration, and care.
“For us,” says David, “it’s not just about design excellence. It’s about relationships, longevity, and creating something that genuinely endures.”
